Electric arc

Incident energy defines the protection requirement.

An electric arc is a discharge through air that can release substantial thermal energy. Its effects may include heat, pressure and projected material. Textile protection is evaluated against the arc's thermal exposure, not all of its effects.

Where it may occur

It is considered in generation, transmission, distribution and electrical maintenance, according to tasks and equipment. Incident energy analysis relates the anticipated exposure to the protective equipment's rating.

The role of fabric

Flame resistance is a necessary property of clothing intended for this hazard, but does not establish its arc rating. Fibers, weight and construction influence the material; testing establishes performance.

What to assess in the clothing

  • The task's incident energy and the selected configuration's arc rating.
  • A test report identifying the material or ensemble and the corresponding protection value.
  • Compatibility of layers and protection of the head, face, hands and other exposed areas.

Scope of protection

An arc rating is expressed in cal/cm² and obtained through testing. Thermal protection and insulation against electrical contact serve different functions.
