Flash fire

A brief exposure. An intense transfer of heat.

Professionals in protective workwear at a petroleum facility; illustrative scene

A flash fire can spread through a flammable mixture of gas, vapor or suspended dust. Thermal exposure may be brief yet still cause serious injury. Clothing that continues burning after the exposure can make the consequences worse.

Where it may occur

It may occur in hydrocarbon operations, petrochemical plants and processes where flammable substances can be released. Assessment considers the potential release, atmosphere and ignition sources.

The role of fabric

Flame-resistant fabric is intended to limit sustained combustion of clothing. In an inherently FR blend, this starts in the fibers; final protection also depends on garment design and tested performance.

What to assess in the clothing

  • The standard and scope of testing for short-duration thermal exposure.
  • The complete ensemble: fabric, sewing thread, fasteners, reflective components and body coverage.
  • Fit, maintenance and contaminants that may alter garment behavior.

Scope of protection

FR does not mean fireproof or turn industrial clothing into a firefighting suit. Personal protection complements prevention and process controls.
