Electrostatic charge

A small discharge can become an ignition source.

Movement and contact between materials can create electrostatic charge buildup. In a flammable atmosphere, a discharge can become an ignition source. Clothing selection is therefore integrated with the installation's other control measures.

Where it may occur

Gas processing, fuel handling, petrochemical facilities and certain powder processes require assessment of ignition sources. The risk depends on the substances and surrounding conditions.

The role of fabric

Anti-static fiber helps control charge buildup. SPRING FR® 4.5 OZ combines 2% of this fiber with meta-aramid and para-aramid.

What to assess in the clothing

  • The garment's electrostatic behavior and declared conditions of use.
  • Compatibility of clothing, footwear, flooring and grounding.
  • Outer layers, accessories and care that may affect the dissipation system.

Scope of protection

Anti-static does not mean insulating. A fabric that helps dissipate charge does not, for that reason, provide protection against electric shock or establish an arc rating.
